Short Answer
Flashbacks are the past intruding on the present — your brain re-experiencing a traumatic memory as if it's happening now. You stop them the same way you calm any nervous-system alarm: ground yourself in the present, regulate your body, and — with time and often professional support — process the memory so it becomes past tense instead of present tense.
What This Means
A flashback is a re-experiencing of trauma: the sensory details, emotions, and body sensations return as if the event is current. It can be visual (images), sensory (smells, sounds, touch), emotional (the terror returns without a visible trigger), or full-body (the physical state of the original event).
Flashbacks differ from ordinary memories. A memory is something you recall; a flashback is something that happens to you — it hijacks the present. This is why they're so disorienting: your brain has briefly lost track of where and when you are.
They can be triggered by anything the brain associates with the event — a smell, a tone of voice, a place, a time of year, a body position — or they can arrive with no identifiable trigger at all, especially during stress or sleep.
The experience is exhausting and frightening, but it's important to know: a flashback is not the event happening again. It's a memory firing in the threat system's present tense — and it can be brought back to the past.
Why This Happens
Trauma disrupts normal memory storage. Ordinary memories get filed as past events; traumatic memories get stored in fragments — sensory, emotional, body-based — without a clear 'this happened then' timestamp. Because the memory was never fully processed as past, it keeps being replayed as present.
The mechanism is the amygdala and hippocampus working out of sync. The amygdala (threat center) stores the emotional and sensory charge; the hippocampus (context center) fails to tag it with time and place. The result: the body responds to the memory as if it's a current threat.
Stress lowers the threshold: flashbacks are more likely when you're depleted, sleep-deprived, or under current stress — the system's processing capacity is reduced, so unprocessed material surfaces.
Avoidance maintains them: the natural response is to push the memory away, but avoidance prevents the processing that would file it as past. The memory stays hot because it never gets metabolized.
What Can Help
- Ground in the present: When a flashback hits, anchor to now — name five things you can see, feel your feet on the floor, hold something cold, say today's date out loud. The goal is to tell your brain: this is now, not then.
- Use the 'then vs now' frame: Remind yourself in a steady voice: 'I am an adult now. The event is over. I am safe in this room.' Repetition helps the brain re-file the memory as past.
- Open your eyes and move: Look around the room slowly, stand, stretch, change your position. Orientation and movement both signal 'present, not threat.'
- Breathe long and slow: Extended exhales activate the calming system, lowering the alarm that the flashback triggered. Breathe out longer than you breathe in.
- Have a flashback plan: Write down your grounding steps in advance — what helps you, who you can call, where you feel safe. When the flashback hits, you don't need to think; you follow the plan.
- Process with a professional: Flashbacks reduce when the memory gets properly processed. Trauma therapies — EMDR, trauma-focused CBT, somatic experiencing — help the brain file the memory as past so it stops replaying as present.
When to Seek Support
If flashbacks are frequent, severe, or interfering with daily life — or if you're avoiding activities, places, or people to prevent them — seek trauma-informed treatment. This is treatable.
