What This Means
Regression here means returning to earlier, less mature ways of managing emotions. If a chatbot always agrees with you, never disappoints you, and is available instantly, you may lose tolerance for the messiness required to grow.

Why This Happens

People with attachment wounds, social anxiety, or neurodivergence may be especially vulnerable because real relationships have historically cost them more. AI becomes a safe harbor that inadvertently reduces exposure to growth opportunities.

- Use AI as a coach: Ask it to rehearse hard conversations rather than avoid them entirely.
- Create real-world assignments: Set one small relational task each week that AI cannot do for you.
- Tolerate discomfort: Sit with a difficult feeling before opening the chatbot.
- Diversify support: Make sure friends, groups, or therapists remain part of your support system.
- Monitor dependency: Notice if your mood drops sharply when the chatbot is unavailable.
